Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Shines at Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Reaches Final After Victory Over Bublik

For its last edition, the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes was spoiled. Because this week, the ATP 250 tournament featured the breakthrough of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. A year after his compatriot Arthur Fils, another blue hope reached the final in Lyon on Friday, what’s more by taking out the 2nd seed in the tournament, Alexander Bublik. The young Frenchman won his first victory against a member of the Top 20 in two sets (6-4, 7-5) and 1h18 of play in the half. To get the trophy, he will have to beat Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Saturday.

To win, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard relied on his favorite weapon: his first ball (85% success behind). But above all he showed himself to be very mentally strong against the whimsical Kazakhstani who attempted no less than 6 spoon serves in a single game at the start of the match at 3-1 against him. By keeping this commitment and breaking immediately, he could have driven his opponent crazy, but the Frenchman recovered immediately to make up the difference (4-3) and take the lead. In the second set, he knew how to bide his time to seize the opponent’s service for the third and final time at 6-4, 5-5.

Before this tournament, Mpetshi Perricard only had two victories on the circuit. In one week, he conquered twice as many (4 including one on package). Already assured of entering the Top 100 (provisional 83rd), he could even get closer to the top 50 in the event of his first title on the circuit. Before Roland-Garros where he will challenge David Goffin in the first round, this is promising.
