Sarah-Léonie Cysique: From Tajikistan to Kazakhstan – A Double Medal Success

Last Friday, Sarah-Léonie Cysique reached the final of the Tajikistan tournament. Returning to France immediately, she doubled up with the Kazakhstan tournament this Friday in Astana. The ACBB judoka won bronze in less than 57 kilos and probably secured her top seed at the Olympics. A great performance and a good operation.

Sarah-Léonie Cysique, how did you manage to achieve a second consecutive medal in eight days while returning to France?

Honestly, I’m happy. I managed to manage my fatigue and my recovery to get off to the best possible start in this second competition in a row. I thought I was going to be more tired than that, that I was going to work harder. I managed it well, my diet. I can’t say what the secret is but I have put everything in place to recover well.

What positive things do you remember about your day?

I found myself quite direct. I’m not going to say sharp. I didn’t find myself hesitant. At the end of last year I was a bit holding back. On this point I find that things are better between here and the tournament in Tajikistan.

You lose in the semi-final against the Brazilian Rafaela Silva, 2016 Olympic champion and double world champion. She against your mowing. Was it a mistake to have insisted on this movement?

I have only taken it once in my life, at the 2019 Worlds in place of three (defeat of the Frenchwoman). Our judo has evolved. I made the mistake early on by letting the two penalties settle. With two penalties against me the match was more difficult. I had to open and I know she is waiting, ready to counter. I had no choice but to commit. The o uchi-gari (large interior mowing) worked well. I tried to analyze my fight while being in it because Séverine Vandenhende only arrived towards the golden score (she was held back by Shirine Boukli’s fight on the next mat). I did some interesting things like a shoulder move. I unbalanced her on an o uchi and came back to it because with a forward movement she is fond of counterattacks. I knew she was still waiting for me. I made a choice. The o uchi did not pay. At least I was able to get it back in my hands before the Olympics, that’s a good point. I will be able to work on it.

You are not going to the Worlds next week, time to rest before preparing for the Olympics?

It’s a lighter week of training. Then a little rest before heading back to training for the Olympics. A little rest and sunshine will do me good. I miss the sun a little bit then it will be ‘road to Paris’!
