Rui Pinto, Creator of Football Leaks, Faces Trial for 377 Crimes Related to Email Access

The creator of Football LeaksRui Pinto, this Monday, March 4th, learns about the investigative decision of the Central Criminal Instruction Court regarding the case in which he is responsible for 377 crimes, related to access to emails Benfica and other entities.

The decision will result in an order of indictment, forwarding the case to trial, or non-indictment, after two previous convictions for the accused, one in Portugal and the other in France.

In relation to this process, Rui Pinto is responsible for 377 crimes related to access to emails of Benfica and other clubs, League of Clubs, companies, lawyers, judges, prosecutors, Tax Authority and National Internal Security Network. According to the indictment, 202 crimes of illegitimate access, 134 of violation of correspondence, 23 of aggravated violation of correspondence and 18 of aggravated damage are involved.

Furthermore, at the end of the instructional debate, the possibility of applying the Amnesty Law of 2023, approved last year due to World Youth Day, was mentioned to 134 of the 377 crimes attributed to the creator of the Football Leaks.

Prosecutor Vera Camacho left the applicability of the Amnesty Law of 2023 to the court’s consideration, with the defense requesting that it be able to annul 310 of the crimes under indictment, while the assistants present at the instructional debate asked that the accused be pronounced for all 377 .

Rui Pinto, 35 years old, who missed the end of the instructional debate, on February 2nd, because he was in France collaborating with European authorities in a process, faces a new process after being convicted, in the case Football Leaks, in September last year, by the Central Criminal Court of Lisbon, to four years in prison with a suspended sentence, for crimes of attempted extortion, aggravated mail violation and illegitimate access. He was sentenced, in November 2023, to six months in prison in France, with a suspended sentence, for illegally accessing emails from the Paris Saint-Germain football club.
