A few weeks before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the good news continues for French basketball. The day after the best rookie prize awarded to Victor Wembanyama, another big name in French basketball was saluted by the NBA: Rudy Gobert. The Minnesota Timberwolves pivot was named “best defender of the year” for the fourth time, ahead of “Wemby”.

At 31, Rudy Gobert receives this new distinction in his career, after 2018, 2019 and 2021. He thus equals the record in this area of Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace. However, this is the first time that he has won this title since he left the Utah Jazz in 2022. After a first season of adaptation, the Frenchman succeeded in his mission: to make the Minnesota Timberwolves the best defense of all the NBA.

Third in the Western Conference with the Wolves, Rudy Gobert does not, however, remain in his best season from a statistical point of view, with 14 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks on average. On the other hand, his defensive contribution is on the rise, and contributes to the great season of the Minneapolis team, still engaged in the playoffs. In the Western Conference semi-finals, the Wolves lead 2-0 against the Denver Nuggets.
