Rotation Plans for Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga Duel with Augsburg

After qualifying for the Champions League early, Borussia Dortmund is relaxed going into the Bundesliga duel with FC Augsburg. In order to save energy for the semi-final second leg in the premier class three days later at Paris Saint-Germain, regular staff should take a break on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). “We will definitely rotate. The game offers the opportunity to give the boys who haven’t played a lot recently a chance,” said coach Edin Terzic. “Nevertheless, we are sure that we have a really good team on the pitch.”

After BVB’s 1-0 win against Paris on Wednesday, Germany can no longer be pushed out of second place in the relevant UEFA rankings and will receive an additional starting place in the Champions League – in favor of the fifth-placed team. These are currently Dortmund, who can no longer fall back to sixth place. This gives Terzic the chance to gain a similar advantage against Augsburg as Paris Saint-Germain, whose game against Nice scheduled for this weekend was postponed.

BVB talent Kjell Wätjen is about to make his debut against Augsburg

Regardless of the possible extensive rotation in the squad, BVB wants to stop the negative trend in the Bundesliga with only one win from four games. But even for the guests, who can still hope for a place in the European Cup, things didn’t go according to plan recently. Three of the last four games were lost. “Both teams still have something to make up for,” commented Terzic, who promised the professional debut of 18-year-old midfield talent Kjell Wätjen.

Worries that his team might lack motivation in view of the highlight game on Tuesday (9 p.m./Amazon Prime Video) in Paris against Augsburg are limited by the Dortmund coach. “In front of 81,000 spectators it is always motivation enough. Everyone who is on the pitch can show how valuable they are to the team,” said the 41-year-old. With the exception of Ramy Bensebaini (29), Julien Duranville (17) and Sébastien Haller (29), all professionals are available.

BVB coach Terzic is promoting Schlotterbeck’s comeback in the DFB team

Terzic also campaigned for Nico Schlotterbeck (24) to return to the German national team. “We talked about how he can play his way back into this circle – through good performances. I just think he showed that. He did a great job at the very highest level and against the absolute top players in Europe. “Nico has developed really well,” praised the BVB coach, referring to Schlotterbeck’s strong performances in the Champions League.

The central defender played his last of eleven international matches on September 9, 2023 in a 4-1 defeat against Japan. Since Julian Nagelsmann took office as DFB coach and successor to Hansi Flick at the end of September 2023, Schlotterbeck has been waiting in vain for a nomination. Mats Hummels (35) had expressed himself just as positively as Terzic about his defense colleague the day before. “It’s crazy how clearly this boy still gets so little appreciation,” said the 2014 world champion on Instagram.
