The yellow balls are getting ready to bounce again on the clay court of Paris. This Monday, May 20, 2024, the Roland-Garros qualifications begin. The Grand Slam tournament will end on Sunday June 9 with the men’s final.

Nadal, farewell to a legend?

This is the most anticipated decision for a long time at Porte d’Auteuil (Paris, 16th). Will Rafael Nadal be there next week? The trend is towards optimism in recent days, but caution is called for with a player who has only played a handful of matches in a year and a half.

Winner of the tournament 14 times (absolute record for a player in a Grand Slam tournament), the Spaniard has made the habit in recent years of celebrating his birthday there (June 3). In the event of elimination, there is no doubt that a tribute will be paid by the organizers for the one who should play his last Roland-Garros. But not his last balls on this clay, since the Mallorcan is expected to participate in the Olympic Games.

A very open picture among men, less so among women?

A weakened Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz plagued by doubts and physical problems. For the first time in a long time, Roland-Garros has never seemed so indecisive. Since 2005, the tournament has only been won by four players : Nadal, Djokovic, Federer et Wawrinka.

A poor form of the big names which could benefit the Norwegian Casper Ruud, finalist the last two years. Among the French, Gaël Monfils, in good shape for several weeks, can hope to hang on for a second week. But seeing a tricolor win the cup for the first time since Yannick Noah in 1983 appears illusory.

Among women, the picture seems a little less open with a Iga Świątek in great shape in recent weeks. The Pole has won the last two editions and is the big favorite. Behind, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka will seek to put an end to her hegemony. Among the French, Caroline Garcia is aiming for a second week. Alizé Cornet will seek to take care of her exit. The Niçoise announced that she would retire at the end of the tournament.

A brand new retractable roof on the Suzanne Lenglen court

After the Philippe Chatrier court (the Central) in 2020, it is around the Suzanne Lenglen court to now have a roof.

This is a retractable roof in ten minutes which will allow matches to be played even in the event of rain. Its design is a “nod to the pleats created by Jean Patou for the skirt of the great tennis champion and stadium legend: Suzanne Lenglen”, indicates Roland-Garros on its site.

The final year of the linesmen

They too will bid farewell to the Paris tournament this year. Linesmen are set to disappear in the very near future. Indeed, from January 2025, automatic arbitration will be deployed across all professional women’s and men’s circuits.

A decision widely denounced by tennis fans who fear robotization like the Var in football.

The French patrol will put on a show

Those who saw the arrival of the Olympic flame in Marseille with their own eyes or in front of their TV were amazed by the spectacle offered. The French patrol will make its comeback during the tournament.

In a press release, the Paris police headquarters indicates that “eight Alphajet-type planes from the Patrouille de France (will fly) above the Roland-Garros stadium. The first operation will take place May 17, 2024 around 11:05 a.m. during training. The second operation will take place June 9, 2024, around 2:50 p.m.during the men’s final.
