Real Madrid Holds Bayern Munich to 2-2 Draw in Champions League Semi-Final First Leg

In front of 75,000 spectators in the Football Arena Munich, Bayern had more of the game right from kick-off, but failed to convert their opportunities into goals. Of all things, Vinicius Junior (24′) made it 1-0 for Real with the guests’ first shot on goal. Toni Kroos provided the assist with a nice long pass into the free space.

After the break, Bayern turned the match around with a double strike. First, Laimer set up Leroy Sane, who scored to make it 1-1 (53′). Then Harry Kane (57th) converted a penalty after a foul on Jamal Mousiala. But in the final phase the “Royals” managed to equalize – also with a penalty. Vinicius Junior took on Manuel Neuer and defeated him (83′).

Bayern start with offensive fireworks

With Laimer, Musiala and Sane getting fit in time, Bayern fired off a real offensive firework from the start. The ball could have hit the net three times in the first quarter of an hour. After just 40 seconds, Real goalie Andrij Lunin had to do a brilliant job with a foot save when Sane finished from a somewhat acute angle. The Ukrainian also saved a shot from Kane (6th). Sane (7th) and Musiala (12th) also shot over.

There was no sign of the “Royals” at the front, but with their first good offensive action they turned the game on its head. After an ideal hole pass from Toni Kroos, Vinicius Junior made the first contact and gave Neuer no chance to defend. The guests were characterized by maximum efficiency. Bayern, on the other hand, also failed to get a Kane free kick into the goal (42′).

Real closer to 2-0 after the break

After the restart the characteristics changed. Neuer fished a Kroos shot out of the Kreuzeck (51′) and thus prevented a quick 0-2. Bayern, on the other hand, were now callous in front of the goal. Laimer initiated the equalizer well with a long pass to the right side, Sane moved inside the penalty area and hit the near corner with his left. This ended a goal drought for the 28-year-old, who last scored in the 8-0 league win against Darmstadt on October 28, 2023.

Three minutes later, Lucas Vazquez met the breaking Musiala in the penalty area and Kane confidently converted the penalty to take the lead. After that, Munich continued to have the better moments, but that changed in the final quarter of an hour. Neuer closed the short corner well in a duel with Vinicius Junior (79′).

Vinicous Junior celebrates his double

Three minutes later, however, Kim Min Jae laid down Rodrygo in the penalty area, Vinicius Junior remained confident against goalkeeper Neuer and was able to celebrate a brace. The Brazilian scored in the semifinals for the third year in a row. Both teams continued their unbeaten competitive game streaks. Real have not lost 19 times, Bayern six times.

Voices about the game:

Thomas Tuchel (Bayern coach): “They did with us what they do with everyone: two goals from two chances to score. That’s why it feels a bit strange now. But the starting position is now basically crystal clear. We don’t need to think about it now. 90 minutes, 120 minutes, penalty shootout. Victory in Madrid and on to Wembley.”

Carlo Ancelotti (Real coach): “We had to defend a lot in the first half, but we didn’t do it with the intensity that I had imagined. They took the lead in the second half, but we pressed better. My overall impression was that we felt comfortable in the game, but the best intensity was missing. Now we have to give everything in the second leg to reach the final at Wembley.”
