Raabs Tennis Club Introduces Padel Tennis Court: A New Attraction in Waidhofen District

The Raabs tennis club spent around 80,000 euros to create a new attraction at the tennis facility – the first padel tennis court in the Waidhofen district. The trend sport padel is a mixture of tennis and squash and is therefore also known as padel tennis.

Padel is an independent racket sport that has many elements that are not found in other sports. Padel is always played in doubles, i.e. with four players, on a 10 by 20 meter field. Padel originally comes from Mexico and is the national sport par excellence, especially in Spanish-speaking countries.

Easier to learn than tennis

“We want to use this facility to appeal to people who don’t play tennis. The sport is easier to learn than tennis and does not require extensive technical training before you can play your first matches. The focus is on fun and games, and there is now even a word tour in padel,” emphasizes tennis club chairman David Hausberger. According to the rules, for example, it is possible to continue playing the ball after it hits the limiting glass wall – provided it first bounces on the ground. For example, the floor-glass-glass sequence is permitted.

The idea of building a padel tennis court arose from the question of what the club should do with the old, no longer used hitting wall next to the tennis courts. “Before we simply tear down the wall without replacing it, we thought we would stay true to our pioneering role in tennis and be the first to build a padel tennis court in the district,” says Hausberger. Franz Strohmer, who took care of the coordination of the construction site, was in charge of construction and planning.

Floodlights and opening hours until 10 p.m

Construction began last year, the earthworks were completed in the fall and the first part of the square was concreted. The rest followed this spring. An asphalt surface was applied to the concrete foundation, followed by a carpet with quartz sand. The maintenance requirement is low compared to a clay tennis court; sand essentially only needs to be added or redistributed when necessary.

This should also enable an earlier start to the season and a later end to the season than with outdoor tennis. “Our goal is to have as long a season as possible. We also have floodlights available, which are included in the price, and can therefore keep the square open until at least 10 p.m. every day,” emphasizes Hausberger. The padel tennis court is reserved via an online booking system, which can also be used to pay the fee. Rental equipment is also available to try out.

The ceremonial opening of the padel tennis court will take place on May 18th with a ceremony and buffet at 10 a.m., followed by two show matches.
