Olympic Flame Shines in Toulouse: Celebrating Badminton and Inclusivity at the Petit Palais des Sports

It was in the Petit Palais des Sports in Toulouse, reorganized for the occasion in a badminton configuration, that the almost 800 spectators had the opportunity to enjoy the Olympic Flame for 8 minutes.

This performance imagined and directed by Gaëtan VERBECK, assisted by Patrick BERTRANNE, put the spotlight on 29 badistas from the Toulouse region. Club volunteers, technical officials, club presidents, young hopefuls, international athletes, coaches, mother and daughter or even brother and sister! The Petit Palais floor welcomed on Friday the representation of French badminton and para-badminton in the broad sense: an Olympic and Paralympic sport, team sport, accessible, mixed and committed to serving a better world!

This relay was imagined as a testimony to the inclusive power of our sport and articulated around our captain, Florence DELGAL, para-badminton athlete (quadruple medalist at the French Para-badminton Championships), Knight of the Legion of Honor and school teacher, we wanted to share her values of surpassing oneself, inclusion and transmission. She then passed the torch to Arthur WAKHEVITSCH, a young hopeful in the discipline from Toulouse, as a passing of the baton to the new generation!

Thanks to the torchbearers: Sylvain LAPEYRE, Maxime GREBOVAL, Gilles CASTILLON, Mélissa GRASSET, Flore DUQUESNE BURGLIN, Awen PICHOT, Ghislain SAULNIER, Pierre STAMM, Kylian LAURENT, Aurélie RIANDET, Florence DELGAL, Marilou MAUREL, Ambre PAILLEX, Roxane VENUTI, Laétitia GARCIN, Michael SIMPSON, Didier CHAUBET, Arthur WAKHEVITSCH, Kathlyn LAURENT, Florent NAVARRO, Martine COUGNARD, Fabien MORAT, Claudia CARON, Didier BEUVELOT, Morgane MOURGUET, Thierry CONTI, Yvette CHENG, Mary DAYDE and Grégory POUGET.

Why TOULOUSE?

A historical and heritage dimension: the Regional League was created before the Federation (as we know it today: before 1979). At the time it was a large pool of badistas. Badminton matches were played in the emblematic Halle aux Grains.

The Petit Palais des Sports, where we are located, hosted Le Volant d’Or, a former international badminton tournament bringing together the best nations (in the 2000s).
