No new contract at Borussia Dortmund

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and its long-time captain Marco Reus are going their separate ways from the summer. As the Champions League semi-finalist announced this Friday, both parties had agreed not to extend the expiring contract.

Reus, who had already played for Dortmund in his youth, returned to the Ruhr area from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012 and spent a total of more than 21 years at BVB.

Reus: “I’m incredibly grateful”

“I have dedicated half my life to this club, experienced a lot of ups and downs, but more ups in my opinion. The club and I have come to the decision not to extend the contract. It made me incredibly proud, I am incredibly grateful to have played for this club for so many years,” said Reus in a video message.

The decision is also important with a view to the Champions League, where Dortmund will go into the semi-final second leg at Paris St. Germain next Tuesday (9 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Champions League and on Prime Video) with a 1-0 lead been. “We want to go to Wembley, we want to bring the trophy to Dortmund. And that’s why it’s simply important that the decision has been made and that the issue is then over. And that we all concentrate on this big goal,” said Reus.

The 34-year-old won the DFB Cup twice with BVB (2017 and 2021), reached the final of the premier class in 2013 and led the club as captain from 2018 to 2023. BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Reus as “one of the greatest players of this club.” He wished him “from the bottom of my heart all the best for his future. We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his professional career, because there are plenty of exciting tasks waiting for him here in Dortmund.”
