Released in Japan in 1989, Super Mario Land was one of the first titles for the classic Game Boy and was developed by Nintendo’s legendary Research & Development 1 division under the direction of Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the original Game Boy. The simple-looking Breakout clone was also developed by Nintendo’s R&D1 department, but this time in collaboration with Intelligent Systems, known for classics like Fire Emblem and the Nintendo or Advance Wars -Row. The simple but catchy gameplay of destroying blocks with a ball bouncing off a paddle fit perfectly on the technically limited Game Boy and was seasoned with a pinch of Mario.
