Nintendo Switch Online Expands with Classic Game Boy Titles: Super Mario Land and Alleyway

Nintendo Switch Online will be growing again in May and there will be a real classic and a launch title for the first Game Boy. From now on, in addition to Super Mario Land, you can also play Alleyway on your Switch, provided you have a “normal” Nintendo Switch Online subscription. In addition to Game Boy titles, Nintendo also publishes NES and SNES games here at irregular intervals.

Released in Japan in 1989, Super Mario Land was one of the first titles for the classic Game Boy and was developed by Nintendo’s legendary Research & Development 1 division under the direction of Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the original Game Boy. The 2D platformer is based on the NES predecessor Super Mario Bros., but deviates from the classic Mario formula in some story and gameplay elements. A real classic that is still worth a look today.

Unusual: In this part, Mario saves Princess Daisy from the space monster Tatanga

Another launch title is Alleyway from 1989. The simple-looking Breakout clone was also developed by Nintendo’s R&D1 department, but this time in collaboration with Intelligent Systems, known for classics like Fire Emblem and the Nintendo or Advance Wars -Row. The simple but catchy gameplay of destroying blocks with a ball bouncing off a paddle fit perfectly on the technically limited Game Boy and was seasoned with a pinch of Mario.

The bonus levels in Alleyway exude Mario charm
