NFL Testing Optical Tracking Systems for First-Down Line Decisions in Preseason, Potential Full-Time Implementation

The NFL will implement optical tracking systems for yardage decisions during the preseason, with the possibility of full-time implementation, a source told ESPN.

The league considers it a test of accuracy on first-down line decisions, the source said, with the option to continue using the measuring chains in 2024.

The league has experimented with the system in the past, but it would need to be installed in all NFL stadiums for it to be functionally used during the regular season.

The league’s competition committee approved the issue in March. It is not on the agenda for the owners’ meeting being held this week in Nashville.
