New England Patriots Draft Drake Maye as Future QB, but Brissett May Start Ahead

The New England Patriots drafted Drake Maye, from the North Carolina Tar Heels, in the 2024 NFL Draft with the aim of him being their next franchise quarterback. However, he might not be a starter from the get-go.

In an interview with NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, Jerod Mayo, the new head coach of New England declared that the best player will be the one who will play during the regular season after a competition in training camp. The Patriots signed veteran Jacoby Brissett as a transition QB option before handing the reins to Maye.

“I don’t think a lot of rookies are ready to get on the field and play. At the end of the day, our philosophy is that the best players are the ones who will play,” Mayo said. “Jacoby understands that he is a mentor, he is very intelligent and has great leadership skills. Hopefully Drake can learn something from him. He would say they will compete all spring, during training camp and the best player will be the starter.”

Brissett has a good chance of being the Bridge QB as he began his career in New England after being drafted in the third round of the 2016 draft and worked with Alex Van Pelt, the Pats’ new offensive coordinator, during his year with the Cleveland Browns ( 2022). With the AFC East team his role was limited because he was Tom Brady’s backup and with the AFC North team he replaced Deshaun Watson.

Before and during the night of the NFL Draft, two teams asked the New England Patriots about the availability of the third overall pick, with which they selected Maye.

The New York Giants, who start Daniel Jones, offered the Patriots the sixth overall pick and the 2025 first round pick in exchange for the third pick. In the end, the New York team selected wide receiver Malik Nabers from the LSU Tigers.
