Luis Medina (Toros), of the A’s, is scheduled to throw about 45 pitches this Wednesday in a simulated game in extended spring training, MLB.com’s Martín Gallegos reported.

The upcoming simulation game will likely represent the final hurdle Medina must overcome in his recovery from a Grade 2 MCL sprain before undertaking what will likely be a multiple-start Minor League rehab assignment.

With injuries mounting in Oakland’s rotation, Medina should have a starting role with the big team.

Return from mourning

Joel Payamps Brewers (Stars) was activated from the bereavement list on Monday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Payamps has missed the last three games, but will rejoin the rotation for the start of Milwaukee’s series against the Pirates. He appears to have fallen behind Trevor Megill in the Brewers’ bullpen pecking order, but he could still find himself in the save mix.

They check shoulder

Yency Almonte (Bulls) of the Cubs will have imaging done on his right shoulder on Monday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reported.

Almonte had been placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with a right shoulder strain, but the Cubs apparently still want to learn more about the extent of the injury.

Back to the bullpen

Jose Cuas (Eagles) of the Cubs, is back in the bullpen after being called up from Iowa, in the International League in Triple A, reported Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network.

Cuás had just been sidelined a day ago, but returns to replace Adbert Alzolay (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list.

Five races

Randy Vasquez (Bulls) of the Padres, allowed five runs, eight hits and one walk, without being able to strike out a batter in 3.2 innings, taking the loss against the Rockies.

Vásquez allowed four of those runs in the fourth inning and was eventually relieved by Adrián Morejón.

Aside from his start against the Cubs last Tuesday, Vásquez has had mostly mediocre outings at the major league level this year. He has a 6.32 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB in 15.2 innings over four starts.

No decision

Jose Soriano (Eagles), of the Angels, pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday.

Soriano allowed just two runners in five innings before running into trouble in the sixth, when the Cardinals loaded the bases against him with one out.

81 launches

Sixto Sanchez (Bulls) disregarded the decision against the Tigers, allowing three runs, all unearned, on five hits and two walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out two.

An error opened the door to a three-run second that was not at all credited to Sanchez, who was generally effective throughout the rest of his outing.

He was able to reach 81 pitches after throwing no more than 68 in any of his previous outings. He is tentatively scheduled to make his next start over the weekend at home, when the Mets travel to Miami.

Increase effectiveness

Jose Leclerc (Eagles) of the Rangers, was responsible for Monday’s defeat. He allowed three runs, two hits and a walk while striking out one one-third of an inning in a 7-0 loss to Cleveland.

His ERA is now 6.88 with a 1.71 WHIP and 15 walks in 17 innings.

tight back

Reynaldo Lopez (Licey) of the Braves was pulled early from the game against the Cubs due to back tightness. He disregarded the decision after allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four in five scoreless innings.

Lopez was taken out of the game throwing 71 pitches, and likely would have returned for the sixth had his back not become a problem.

He will be considered day-to-day before his next outing, but the club hopes he will be ready for his next start, according to Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Inconsistent

Jonathan Class (Toros), of the Mariners, has a .156 average and a .311 slugging percentage in the 58 plate appearances he has recorded for Triple-A with the Tacoma Rainers since his demotion on April 29.

Clase had posted a .333/.333/.500 line in the Rainiers’ first 12 games of the season before being called up to the big league club, where he got off to a similarly strong start before faltering.
