Mission Impossible: Dominic Thiem’s Farewell Tour Threatened by Olympic Wildcard Snub

Farewell tour

For Dominic Thiem (30), taking part in the Olympic tennis tournament threatens to become a “mission impossible”.

The former world number three and 2020 US Open winner is threatened with the next setback on his farewell tour. After not getting a wildcard for the French Open in Paris (from May 26th), our tennis ace probably needs a small miracle to be able to serve at the same facility at the Olympic Games (July 26th – August 11th).

Olympic wildcards reserved for Nadal and Murray

As reported, only the top 56 of the adjusted world rankings from June 10th (maximum 4 players per nation) are eligible to compete in the Olympic tennis tournament. Thiem (ATP-117) is far from that. There are also two wild cards for former Grand Slam or Olympic champions. The 14-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal (ATP-305) and double Olympic champion Andy Murray (ATP-77) would have priority. From Monday, Thiem wants to fight his way into the French Open field through qualification, which requires three wins. It could be his last appearance at Roland Garros
