Mexican Archers Valencia and Grande Win Gold at Yecheon 2024 World Cup

Archers Alejandra Valencia Trujillo and Matías Grande Kalionchiz reaffirmed Mexico’s place in the elite of this sport, after becoming champions of mixed teams at the Yecheon 2024 World Cup, an event in which the country won three medals (gold, silver and bronze).

In their third year as the stellar Aztec duo, the Olympic medalist and the Pan American monarch were dominant and the evolution in their synergy earned them a 6-2 victory over the Japanese Ruka Uehara and Junya Nakanishi, who had no answer for the precision of the nationals in the grand final.

It is the fifth medal they have achieved together, after the golds won at the Santiago 2022 Pan American Championship and the San Salvador 2023 Central American Games, the silver at the current year’s Medellín Pan American Games and the bronze at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

After conquering glory alongside the barely 20-year-old athlete, the world runner-up prepared to shine individually in the semifinals, where she lost 2-6 to the South Korean Hunyoung Jeon. After that result, she settled into the duel for third place, which she achieved thanks to her 6-4 victory against Deepika Kumari, from India.

In the compound category, Maya Becerra from Jalisco won the silver medal after losing in the final against Colombian Sara López by a score of 144-146. In the semifinals, the world runner-up in 2023 had defeated the British Ella Gibson, number one in the world ranking, 146-143.

The legion of archers will return to Mexican territory to prepare their last two commitments before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: the World Qualifier in Turkey, where the men’s recurve team will seek its ticket to the great event from June 14 to 17, and the third stage of the World Cup Series, in the same country from June 18 to 23.
