MBC Narrowly Secures Victory Against BG Göttingen after Nearly Losing Lead

The Syntainics MBC followed up after successfully staying in the league and also won against BG Göttingen. However, the Weißenfels team almost lost their comfortable lead shortly before the end.

In the end, head coach Predrag Krunic’s team narrowly had the upper hand at 92:88 (51:41). In the meantime, the MBC had led by 16 points before Göttingen came within two points in the final minutes and even had the chance to equalize.

Ultimately it was Johnathan Stove, the MBC’s most successful thrower with 21 points, whose two free throws gave the Weißenfelsers their eleventh win of the season. The Saxony-Anhalters have overtaken Göttingen in the table and can no longer be pushed out of 13th place before the end of the season on Sunday against Rasta Vechta – their best placement in nine years. The MBC had already secured their relegation last weekend.

Breunig and Stove lead the way

Weißenfels needed a few minutes to find his way into the game. Thanks to a 7-0 run, which Stove refined to make it 16:11, the guests finally got the momentum on their side in the first quarter. Nevertheless, the game remained close. Göttingen was repeatedly successful with rebounds. But the MBC also convinced under the boards and maintained its lead. Center Martin Breunig created an eight-point cushion with four points in a row before Stove increased the lead to ten points for the first time shortly before halftime with a converted three-pointer (51:41).

Göttingen is fighting its way up

The MBC also initially showed a concentrated performance and temporarily pulled away to 59:43. Göttingen didn’t give up and was able to reduce the deficit again and again, but at the end of the third quarter the Weißenfels team increased the number of hits again and looked like the supposedly sure winner for a long time.

But then more mistakes crept into the game, Göttingen took advantage of its chances and worked its way up step by step. 90 seconds before the final siren, the lead had dwindled to two points. Umoja Gibson had the chance to equalize, but his throw from close range missed the basket. The MBC secured the rebound before Stove removed the last doubts about victory from the free throw line.
