Jannik Sinner will be the big absentee at the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. Now the tournament organizers received the next bitter news.

As it was announced on Wednesday, Matteo Berrettini will not be there in the Eternal City either. The Roman suffered from tonsillitis at the end of April, which caused him to miss the tournament in Madrid. Berrettini actually wanted to return to the tennis stage in Rome and also completed a few training sessions at the Foro Italico. But the 28-year-old is withdrawing one day before his first match.

“I’ve tried everything possible, but I’m not ready to play a tournament yet,” Berrettini said in a press conference on Wednesday. The Roman, who has fallen to 95th place in the world rankings due to various injuries, should have played his opening match against Stefano Napolitano on Thursday, but that won’t happen. Instead, JJ Wolf takes over as a lucky loser.

Not there for the third time in a row

For Berrettini, his home tournament remains magical. The last time he played in Italy’s capital was three years ago. The former Wimbledon finalist missed the last two editions due to injury, but he should have celebrated his comeback this year. There were huge crowds of fans at Berrettini’s training sessions – but they won’t get to see a match.

After Jannik Sinner (hip problems), Berrettini is the second big, well-known loss for the Azzurri. Carlos Alcaraz, third in the world rankings, will also not be there in the Eternal City due to injury.
