This Tuesday, the public prosecutor explained “that all hypotheses remain considered” after the first elements of the investigation. And precisely this Wednesday morning, Provence reveals the first details of this shooting and explains that “the new elements make the circumstances of the shooting even stranger”. It all starts around 3:15 a.m., when the three cars follow each other. In the first line, that of Faris Moumbagna, then that of Jean Onana and finally that of Bamo Meité. At that moment, everything was going well for the three Olympians who had just won their last match of the season.

The hypothesis of an error by the attackers
A few minutes later, a fourth car arrives and quickly chases the cars of Onana and Moumbagna. The individual, in this car, opened fire several times on the two Cameroonian internationals. Two bullets will even lodge in the driver’s door of Faris Moumbagna’s vehicle which will end up in a pylon even though he had accelerated to escape his attackers. He will logically be in shock after that, just like Jean Onana, who received a bullet in his trunk, and Bamo Meité who was therefore not targeted by the attackers’ shots. Provence adds that the attackers disappeared immediately without leaving a trace while no ammunition case was found at the scene. This could indicate the use of a revolver.

An investigation was quickly opened by the Marseille prosecutor’s office according to the judicial police. The Banditry Repression Brigade (BRB) was also contacted for “attempted intentional homicide”. However, while there was only talk of an attempted carjacking at first, the situation has changed a little in recent hours. There is also the possibility of a navigation error on the part of the attackers and therefore of a “contempt” with potential targets. The attackers could have confused the vehicles with other people. Moreover, the possibility of a meeting between the three players and the attackers, which would have gone wrong, was quickly ruled out.
