Luis Gil Shines as Yankees Beat Mariners 5-0 to Split Series

Luis Gil allowed one hit in 6.1 innings, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge hit early home runs against Luis Castillo and the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Thursday to split the honors of this four-game series.

Gil (6-1) retired his first nine batters before giving up an infield single to JP Crawford in the fourth. The right-hander struck out eight batters and walked three after striking out 14 White Sox players Saturday to set a record for a Yankees rookie.

After Crawford’s hit, Gil retired the next six batters before walking twice in the sixth. After the walk to Dylan Moore, Gil received a visit from pitching coach Matt Blake and ended the inning by striking out Luke Raley with a 97 mph fastball.

In the seventh, Gil retired Mitch Garver on a ball at the warning track, then was removed from the game. The pitcher left to a standing ovation from the crowd. He waved to the crowd, tipping his cap as he headed toward the dugout.

Gil won a fifth straight start. He has allowed two earned runs in 30.2 innings in his last five starts.

His release allows the Yankees to establish a team record of eleven consecutive starts of at least five innings while allowing no more than two runs.

Clay Holmes entered the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and got four outs for his 14th save in his first appearance since a rare blowout in the series opener Monday when he allowed four runs in the ninth inning in a 5-4 loss.

Stanton gave the Yankees the lead in the second inning by hitting a 445-foot home run over Monument Park to center field. It was his sixth homer in 14 games.

Judge made it 2-0 in the third with a homer into the Yankees bullpen to right-center field for his 15th homer. It was his ninth home run in 17 games.

Including the postseason, the Yankees are 36-4 when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game.

Juan Soto singled for a run in the seventh before Alex Verdugo and Anthony Rizzo hit sacrifice flies.

Castillo (4-6) allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out three batters and walked three.
