Last Chance for French Badminton Hopefuls to Participate in Paris Olympics

This is the last chance resort. Ronan Labar and Lucas Corvée, victims of a calculation error on the part of the International Badminton Federation (BWF), still hope to participate in the Paris Olympics. The latter acknowledged its error in a document sent to the French Federation. However, nothing has been put in place on his part to help and support the French pair until Paris 2024.

Indeed, the CNOSF confirmed last week the names of those qualified for the Paris Olympics, those of Ronan Labar and Lucas Corvée are absent. In a position faithful to the true classification of the Race, the FFBad nominated Christo and Toma Junior Popov for the men’s doubles, hoping to see the selection “enriched soon” of Labar and Corvée, of which she asks “exceptional qualification. »

Supported by the annoyed National Federation, the two excluded French people had earlier requested a wildcard (invitation) from the BWF. Request to which the BWF responded in the negative: “The BWF has expressed itself on several occasions and deeply regrets this error and has, in no case, wanted to minimize this matter”underlines the president of the body, the Dane Poul-Erik Hoyer. “But in the qualification regulations for Paris 2024, there is no exceptional qualification. »

Trust is broken

“We have shared the information received following a consultation with the IOC and unfortunately similar situations have already occurred in other sports. And no exceptions were made. » The only solution available to the Corvée-Labar pair is for the IOC to agree to go from 16 pairs of men’s doubles to 17 pairs. An endless wait for the players and the president of the Federation Yohan Penel, who believes that the “trust is broken with the BWF. »

In the meantime, the two French players are training very little. “Difficult to pick up the racket”, for Ronan Labar. “ With Lucas, we communicate daily. We each play a little in our club. We keep ourselves in shape, not much more. But we would like to either turn the page officially, or get back to preparation”, wishes the player who planned to retire from sports at the end of the Olympic Games. In the event of failure, all that will remain is to initiate legal proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
