Kenyan Beatrice Chebet runs world record over 10,000 meters in Oregon

Kenyan Beatrice Chebet improved the world record for 10,000 meters by almost seven seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, USA. The 24-year-old ran 28:54.14 minutes in the US state of Oregon on Saturday, making her the first athlete to stay under the 29-minute mark. The previous record, set by Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey on June 8, 2021, was 29:01.03 minutes. Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia came second in Eugene in 29:05.92 minutes.

Two years ago, Chebet achieved her greatest international success to date at the same venue by winning silver at the World Championships over 5000 metres.

A year ago in Budapest, she finished third in the World Championships over this distance. At the Olympic Games in Paris at the beginning of August, Chebet initially wants to concentrate on the 5000 meters, as she said after her world record over twice the distance. She last ran a race over 10,000 meters in Nairobi in 2020.
