Under the scorching sun of a May with a summer flavour, the Virgilians dominate with a clear 4-1 victory in the sanctuary of the Stabiesi. Arriving at Romeo Menti with the expectation of an almost friendly match, I am promptly contradicted by the enthusiasm of the fans preparing to enter.
The home supporters liven up the corner and crowd the stands and side sectors. It is my first opportunity to observe the Virgilians at work, taking advantage of this long trip of almost 700 km that separates Mantua from Castellammare. They don’t disappoint at all: a large group of enthusiasts who make themselves heard from the moment the players enter the pitch. A performance of great impact, extremely convincing: flags, banners, patches and scarves, chants, drums and non-stop clapping, nothing is lacking in terms of visibility. The red and white stand out among the yellow and blue seats and there is no containment net for the faith and support they provide to the team, which feeds, reciprocates and repays their warmth with a test without appeals on the pitch.
The people from Stabia, on the other hand, welcome the team onto the pitch with a suggestive scarf and some smoke bombs, confirming their stylistic signature for the entire ninety minutes, based on tradition and at the same time suggestive and colourful. From the point of view of the fans themselves, despite the gap on the pitch which is already evident in the first minutes, they keep their faith, beauty and determination intact through chants that are always nice to hear, unfortunately not translated into goals by their boys on the pitch. In the second half they also show a banner that makes public the breakdown of the friendship with Syracuse which has been talked about so much in the previous days.
The final applause from the Virgilians addressed to the Stabia players, the last to leave the pitch, was very beautiful: more than the symbolic value of this category trophy, the thing that matters most is that both are already in Serie B and in these ninety minutes they have already widely confirmed, in terms of football but above all in terms of support, that he deserves the second place.
