Jeonju City, Jeollabuk-do, is attempting to host the World Badminton Championships.

If the tournament is successfully hosted, it will be the first time in the history of Korean badminton that the World Championships will be held in Korea.

According to Jeonju City on the 3rd, the ‘2027 World Badminton Championships Hosting Basic Plan Research Service’ will be conducted until July.

This service is to analyze the economic ripple effects of hosting the World Championships, competition operation, and hosting conditions. Basic plans and attraction strategies for successful competition operation are also established.

Once the service is completed, the plan is to obtain the consent of the city council and then sign an agreement with the Korea Sports Council to be eligible to apply to host the competition.

Jeonju City, which previously successfully held the ‘2023 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Senior Championships’, turned its attention to the World Championships. The plan is to raise Jeonju’s image as a sports city by hosting the World Championships following the World Senior Championships.

Jeonju City is building a new indoor gym near Jeonju World Cup Stadium. It will be built as the only indoor gymnasium in the Jeonbuk region that can host domestic and international sports games such as basketball, volleyball, handball, and badminton.

A city official said, “Once we conclude the agreement with the Korea Sports Council, we will formally submit an application for hosting to the World Badminton Federation after review by governments such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.”

Meanwhile, the Korea Badminton Association and Jeonju City held the ‘2023 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Senior Championship’ at Jeonju Hwasan Gymnasium and Jeonju Indoor Badminton Court from September 11 to 17 last year.

About 1,400 athletes from 45 countries around the world participated in this competition. It was a huge success with over 2,000 people attending, including BWF executives, international referees, and their families. Initially, this competition was scheduled to be held only at Hwasan Gymnasium, but due to the influx of applications from overseas players at the last minute, one more stadium was added.
