Jannik Sinner on the Verge of Becoming World Number 1 in Tennis

Jannik Sinner had to miss the Masters in Rome due to hip problems. His participation in the French Open (May 26th to June 9th) is also in jeopardy. Nevertheless, the Pusterer could soon become number 1 in the tennis world for the first time.

Because Novak Djokovic was eliminated in the second round in Rome on Sunday, his lead in the world rankings over Sinner is now only a good 1,000 points. In Paris, the Serb, as defending champion, has to defend an extremely large number of points from last year. In short: If Djokovic doesn’t reach at least the final at the French Open, Sinner will be promoted to the new number 1 – even if the South Tyrolean doesn’t play at all due to injury.

However, there is one exception here: If Daniil Medvedev (currently number 4) were to win in Rome and then also the Grand Slam tournament in Paris and Sinner could not compete, the Russian would rise to number 1. This is reported by the Dolomites and the Gazzetta dello Sport, among others. However, this scenario is relatively unlikely as Medvedev is not exactly considered a clay court specialist and has recently been struggling with adductor problems.

Sinner could rise to number 1 because he has almost no points to defend from last year compared to Djokovic in Paris. World number three Carlos Alcaraz is also currently injured and would not be able to overtake Sinner even if he triumphed in Rolland Garros. June 10th could be the deadline and become a historic moment in South Tyrolean sports history.

Sinner is being examined

Sinner himself is currently in Turin at the Juventus medical center to have his injured right hip treated. There is still no official statement to report. But according to media reports, the Sinner team is in good spirits that the Sesto native will be able to play again in Paris in two weeks. But if Sinner doesn’t get fit in time, they don’t want to take any risks.
