Iván Herrera Steps Up as Starting Catcher for St. Louis Cardinals After Willson Contreras Injury

After the early departure of Willson Contreras due to a fracture in his left arm, Panamanian Iván Herrera’s opportunities have increased. He will be the starting catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals while Contreras is recovering.

“We have great people here who support each other and I think I can help this team win,” Herrera said.

“I’ve felt good. There’s nothing better than fighting and then getting out of it, right? I think that’s when you know what kind of player and person you are: when you hit rock bottom. I have been struggling, but I come to the field every day. Hard work will always pay off. “It’s a long season,” he added.

The organization has praised Herrera’s ability to carry pitches and the connection he has achieved with pitchers.

“I don’t feel nervous in important moments. I used to feel very nervous. Now it’s like, I go out, like I said, and do the best I can and put the ball in play and give it a good swing. Most of the time, I just try to control what I can control. … Right now I have a lot of confidence that I will be able to do this job.”

So far this season he is hitting .263 in 27 games, with three home runs, one double, in 80 at-bats.
