Italian national coach Luciano Spalletti has called up a provisional squad of 30 players for the European Championship in Germany. There is no room for Marco Verratti, among others. 4 more players will be left out later.
Spalletti had no place in his selection for midfielders Marco Verratti (Al-Arabi) and Manuel Locatelli (Juventus) and striker Ciro Immobile (Lazio).
The trio played an important role on the way to the European title three years ago. Verratti was not called up again after his transfer to Qatar last summer. Immobile was last selected in September last year and Locatelli was there in March.
Surprisingly enough, the one who is present is Nicolo Fagioli. The Juventus midfielder only celebrated his return on Monday after a seven-month suspension for his part in a gambling scandal.
Italy was placed in group B at the European Championship, the so-called ‘group of death’. The Italians open against Albania on Saturday, June 15 in Dortmund. Afterwards, the Azzurri will face Spain on June 20 in Gelsenkirchen and Croatia on June 24 in Leipzig.
The Italian selection will travel to Germany on June 10. Before that, they will practice against Turkey (June 4) and Bosnia (June 9).
