LEON, May 23. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Sports Department of the León City Council, through the Municipal Sports Schools (EDM), has organized a new edition of the ‘Municipal Sports Gala’, which will be held tomorrow, Friday, May 24, at the Exhibition Palace at starting at 6:00 p.m.
The mayor of León, José Antonio Diez, accompanied by the Councilor for Sports, Vicente Canuria, will participate in this sporting event in which prizes will be awarded to the champion teams of the schools that have participated in the Municipal Phase of the School Games of the León City Council, carried out throughout this course.
Since last October, more than 25 weeks of school competition have been held with regular competitions in team and individual sports, tournaments and concentrations.
Around 600 schoolchildren and 73 teams are invited to this end-of-year party, the Municipal Sports Gala 2024, first classified in pre-child to youth categories, in men’s, women’s and mixed teams.
All of them belonging to fourteen sports disciplines (chess, athletics, badminton, basketball, handball, boxing, cross country, climbing, indoor soccer, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby, rescue and lifeguarding, table tennis and volleyball.
RECOGNITIONS
During the Sports Gala, tribute will be paid to different agents, collaborators and athletes who have intervened in favor of school-age sports in the city. Among them, recognition will be made to the Leonese Wrestling Federation for its recent constitution and for the protection and dissemination of Leonese wrestling.
Among the awarded athletes, recognition will be given to Chema Blanco Cebada, for his achievements in skiing; Raúl Matilla García, for his sporting career in the current athletics season in which he has won the university championship, the regional championship and the under 20 national championship in high jump.
Martín Magallanes Pérez also appears, for his achievements in Table tennis both at the regional and national level, being runner-up in 2024 in the ‘Top 8’ Tournament with the best national players in his category.
In addition, the players of the León Basketball teams Lioness and BFL Julia Álvarez, Sara Antúnez and Noa García will be awarded for winning their recent Spanish Basketball championship for regional teams in the children’s category.
There is also Isidoro García García, an athlete with more than 30 years of experience in native sports, who has managed to be provincial runner-up, champion of Castilla y León and champion of Spain in Leonese bowling and chosen best senior male player by the Federation of Native Sports of Castilla y León.
Likewise, a special recognition will be made to Luis Alberto Fernández Diez, for his contribution to the city’s basketball in the promotion of school teams, male and female players throughout his career, and for his professional dedication at the Municipal Sports School of basketball.
