IOC Announces Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024: 36 Athletes to Compete in Twelve Disciplines

The IOC announced Thursday the list of 36 athletes who will make up the Olympic team representing refugees from around the world. They will compete in twelve different disciplines, including boxing, judo, taekwondo and cycling.

At each Olympics, the number of athletes grows and this is not really a good sign for the state of the world: while there were 29 in Tokyo, there will be 36 in Paris to represent the 100 million displaced people in the world. as part of the Refugee Olympic Team.

This is the third time in history that a refugee Olympic team will participate in the Games after Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. As in previous Olympics, these high-level athletes come from 11 different countries: Afghanistan, Cameroon , Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria and Venezuela.

During the 2024 Olympics, these athletes will compete in 12 different disciplines: athletics, badminton, boxing, breaking, canoeing (slalom and sprint), cycling, weightlifting, judo, wrestling (freestyle and Greco-Roman), swimming, taekwondo and shooting.

“Through your participation in the Olympic Games, you will demonstrate human potential in terms of resilience and excellence. A message of hope will thus be sent to the more than 100 million displaced people around the world,” praised the President of the CIO, Thomas Bach, during the announcement.

The chef de mission of the refugee team will be cyclist Masomah Ali Zada, who competed in the last Olympics as a member of the Tokyo 2020 Refugee Olympic team.

During the ceremony, the IOC also revealed an emblem for this team.
