Heidelberg/Oldenburg – Basketball coach Ingo Freyer (53) is experiencing the same process for the third time in a row. After he took over the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club Academics Heidelberg in January and led them to stay in the league, he has not received a new contract. “The substantive ideas of a long-term collaboration were too far apart on both sides,” said Heidelberg’s managing partner Matthias Lautenschläger – whatever that meant. It is still unclear who will be Heidelberg’s new coach.

Freyer took over EWE Baskets Oldenburg, which was then threatened with relegation, in the 2021/22 season and managed to stay in the league with the team. He wasn’t allowed to stay beyond the end of the season; Oldenburg signed Pedro Calles at the time. Shortly before the end of the 2022/23 season, Freyer was signed by MBC Weißenfels in the hope that the team would stay in the league – and that succeeded. Freyer then had to leave there too; Weißenfels brought in former Oldenburg player Predrag Krunic.
