Ice Hockey World Cup: Germany clearly loses to the USA at the Ice Hockey World Cup

The German national ice hockey team suffered a significant defeat against the USA at the World Cup. In the second group game, the German team lost 1:6 (0:2, 1:2, 0:2) against co-favorites USA in the Czech city of Ostrava.

With Nico Sturm, an important key player who otherwise plays at a high level in the US NHL league is also in danger of being eliminated. The striker was not used against the USA for unknown reasons. Defenders Maksymilian Szuber and Fabio Wagner were also out before the game.

Yasin Ehliz scored the German goal after 35 minutes to make it 1:3. US captain Brady Tkachuk had previously given his team a 1-0 lead; Michael Kesselring (18th), Johnny Gaudreau (33rd), Luke Hughes (40th), Trevor Zeagras (51st) and Michael Eyssimont (53rd) scored the other goals for the USA. The US team has 19 players who otherwise play in the NHL. National coach Harold Kreis had predicted “a tough fight” before the game.

The USA had lost their opening game 2:5 against Sweden and were under corresponding pressure against Germany. Germany, however, defeated Slovakia 6-4 in the first game. Next Monday, Germany will play against Sweden, who are also said to have a chance of winning the World Cup. Germany itself is the current runner-up in the world championships and is aiming for the quarter-finals as the minimum goal of the World Cup.
