The German national ice hockey team is eliminated from the World Championship in the quarter-finals against the favorites Switzerland. After the defeat, disappointment prevails. A sign of the new self-image.

The German national ice hockey team launched attack after attack. Harold Kreis’s team repeatedly tried to force an equalizer in the quarter-finals of the World Championship. But no matter what the team did, they were held back by the strong Swiss defense. Even when the coach put everything on the line and took his goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer off the ice for a sixth field player, the favorites remained cool. Christoph Bertschy scored for Switzerland in the final minute into the empty German goal to make it 3-1, sealing the Germans’ exit from the quarter-finals.

A repeat of the sensation from the previous year, when Germany won silver at the World Cup for the first time, did not happen at this World Cup. Nevertheless, the national team can be satisfied with the performance it has brought to the ice in the past two weeks. With five wins in the preliminary round, it easily qualified for the quarter-finals and thus achieved the realistic minimum goal it had set for itself.

“It’s bitter. It’s the little things that decide at this level. We had too much respect at the beginning. After that we did a lot of things right. We are definitely disappointed. When you’re in the quarter-finals you want more. We just didn’t do well enough today, congratulations to Switzerland,” said captain Moritz Müller.

“Our team has invested everything in this tournament

Germany lost the quarterfinals, especially in the early stages, when the team showed too much respect for Switzerland, who had seven stars from the NHL. Christoph Bertschy and top striker Nico Hischier scored a well-deserved 2-0 lead. After the first break, Germany got better and better with each passing minute, but was repeatedly thwarted by the good Swiss defense.

“We had too much respect in the first 20 minutes. But the team performed very well from the second third onwards. The Swiss played very well in defence. Our team worked very hard and fought very hard, they put everything into this tournament,” said national coach Harold Kreis.
