Germany lost to Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the Ice Hockey World Championship in the Czech Republic. The team of national coach Harold Kreis was eliminated in Ostrava after a 1:3 (0:2, 1:0, 0:1) defeat. After two German quarterfinal victories against Switzerland in the past three years, the Swiss are now in the semifinals on Saturday.

Dominik Kahun (32nd minute) scored the only goal for Germany in the majority. Christoph Bertschy (8th/60th) with a hit into the empty German goal and NHL top striker Nico Hischier (17th) scored the goals for the Swiss, who consistently exploited weaknesses in the German defense.

The German defense was able to withstand the Swiss’ first phase of pressure. But as against the leading nations USA (1:6) and Sweden (1:6) in the preliminary round, the German defense – without world-class defender Moritz Seider from the Detroit Red Wings – showed weaknesses.

The DEB selection had to admit defeat to Switzerland in the knockout round for the first time since the 1992 World Cup in Prague. Germany finished the tournament in sixth place after finishing runner-up last year. Parallel to the Swiss victory, last year’s world champion Canada qualified for the semi-finals with a 6:3 (2:1, 1:0, 3:2) against Slovakia.
