HSV Fans Lament 0-1 Defeat in Paderborn: Sixth Non-Promotion

The HSV professionals stood in front of their fan block and listened to their supporters in frustration. They sang about the 0-1 defeat in Paderborn and the sixth non-promotion with “I love my Hamburg very much”.

Hamburg’s footballers are lucky that their fans have such a big heart for their club. One could have reacted differently to this idea.

It’s ridiculous when you “fight” for the last chance for promotion like HSV did at SC Paderborn.

Despite the emotional derby triumph against FC St. Pauli (1-0), the remaining hope of catching up with Düsseldorf (which was four points ahead before matchday 33) in the final spurt of the second division was minimal. But – you should at least give everything for it…

HSV performed disastrous – especially in the first 30 or 35 minutes. In view of the “performance” they were well served with a 0-1 deficit at the break (Kostons/7th).

Defender Miro Muheim (26): “It wasn’t according to the plan. We didn’t do simple things right. Simple passes not sold. If you play so badly, something like this will happen.”

Goalkeeper Matheo Raab (25): “The disappointment is huge. We wanted to leave the pressure on Düsseldorf, but we couldn’t do that.”

And with a view to the sixth non-promotion: “There were too many games in which we gave away points. Then in the end it’s just not enough.”

Steffen Baumgart (52) was still celebrated by Paderborn’s fans even after the final whistle. He was coach at Ostwestfalen for four years (2017 – 2021), marching with the club from the 3rd league to the Bundesliga.

He now had to explain the HSV disgrace at his old place of work: “We missed a lot, especially in front of the goal. We are very disappointed that we didn’t manage to play good football today.”

Baumgart (contract until 2025) was already talking about the next round. He wants to make a new attempt: “I’m happy to be able to work here every day. This is a childhood dream of mine. We want to draw the right conclusions from the season. Everything hasn’t been good since I’ve been here. Everything wasn’t good before.”

And: “A lot of positive things have happened in the last few years, but the big goal is still a long way away. With one match day left you are out of the race for promotion.”

Baumgart wants to start planning quickly. To do this, however, the supervisory board must first decide who should be responsible for planning the coming season: sports director Jonas Boldt (42, contract until 2025) or someone else?

Baumgart: “In contrast to previous years, HSV can plan sensibly right from the start. Maybe that will help us. I think – yes. I believe we will come out of the situation stronger.”

The coach also did a bit of advertising for himself. He assesses his tenure (since February 20, 2024) as follows: “I have seen a clear change in the team. Things have gradually improved. In terms of intensity, in terms of running meters.”

Further: “A game like this is an exception. Of course it’s exactly the wrong time. But it’s not that we can’t play football. You can’t ruin everything because of one game.”

Now the supervisory board around its chairman Michael Papenfuß (69) has to ensure clarity…
