Houston Texans Acquire Ben Skowronek to Bolster Receiving Corps

The Houston Texans added to their receiving corps Thursday by acquiring Ben Skowronek from the Los Angeles Rams, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini initially reported the Rams were releasing Skowronek. Instead, they’ll get some compensation in return for the 26-year-old wideout.

Skowronek, a seventh-round pick in 2021, caught 58 passes for 575 yards and one touchdown across three seasons with the Rams.

During the 2023 campaign, Cooper Kupp’s return from a hamstring injury and the emergence of Puka Nacua helped to push Skowronek down the depth chart. He appeared in all 17 games but was targeted just 12 times, well below his 61 targets in 2022.

Now, he’s joining an offense with just as many options at receiver. Nico Collins and Tank Dell combined for 2,006 receiving yards, and their generally strong play didn’t stop Houston from trading for four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs.

Granted, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik may not envision Skowronek’s biggest impact coming in the aerial attack. The 6’3″, 224-pound pass-catcher lined up at fullback on occasion in Los Angeles and asked to open up running lanes.

Whether he’s operating between the tackles or working from the outside Skowronek’s run-blocking is the skill that might have landed him in Houston.
