Handball: Handball Bundesliga confirms license revocation for HSV Hamburg

The Presidium of the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) has rejected a complaint from HSV Hamburg against the revocation of the license for the coming season. The committee thus confirmed a decision by the independent licensing commission, which had denied the club permission to play for the 2024/25 season on Friday.

As justification, the commission stated that the association had not submitted “proof of its economic performance by closing the identified significant liquidity gap” on time. On April 17th, HSV Hamburg was only given provisional permission to play under the condition of this proof.

The association now only has the option of appealing to the association’s internal arbitration tribunal. “After a thorough legal review, we are convinced that the club should receive the license for the coming season and will therefore submit an arbitration claim to the arbitration court in a timely manner in order to obtain a decision in our favor,” said supervisory board member André van de Velde.

Without a license there is a risk of relegation

The deadline for filing an arbitration claim ends one week after HSV Hamburg receives the HBL’s decision. Then a three-member committee comprising a presiding judge and a representative each from the association and the club must make a majority decision.

If HSV Hamburg is not successful here either, it would be the second relegated team in the Handall-Bundesliga. In this case, only the bottom of the Bundesliga table, the HBW Balingen-Weilstetten syndicate, would have to move into the second division. Table 17. would remain in the upper house.
