Handball Bundesliga: HBL Executive Board confirms license revocation for HSV Hamburg

As of: May 6, 2024 4:44 p.m

On Monday, the Presidium of the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) rejected HSV Hamburg’s objection to the license revocation for the 2024/2025 season. The HSVH now wants to go to the independent arbitration tribunal.

This must be done within one week of delivery of the decision by the HBL. The process can take several weeks. If HSVH’s license were to be revoked, coach Torsten Jansen’s team would be relegated and slip into the fourth league, the highest division of the regional association. In this case, only the bottom team in the Bundesliga would have to go into the second division. Table 17. would remain in the upper house.

On April 17th, the league association granted Hamburg the license for the coming season only on the condition that a significant liquidity gap could be proven to be closed by last Friday (12 p.m.). “This was not proven to the independent licensing commission within the set deadline,” said an HBL statement.

Bank guarantee came an hour late

The club reacted with surprise. “We are sure that we have met the condition,” said HSVH managing director Sebastian Frecke. To this end, some contracts have been adjusted in the past few days in order to “move payments forward” and “to prevent the scenario of a liquidity gap calculated by HBL from occurring”.

Apparently the Hamburgers had submitted a necessary bank guarantee to the independent licensing commission an hour too late. “This deadline was known. And with all efforts, you also have to take care of the administrative process. That’s part of management. It’s not just about increasing your income and reducing expenses, but also about managing a company that it has the maturity to play in the handball Bundesliga,” said HBL managing director Frank Bohmann to NDR.
