The season at Tottenham Hotspur is over for Timo Werner. The attacker, who was loaned to London by RB Leipzig, is injured in the final phase of the English football championship.

As coach Ange Postecoglou confirmed on Wednesday (May 1, 2024), Werner suffered an injury to his thigh muscles last Sunday in the 2-3 win in the North London derby against league leaders Arsenal FC. The 28-year-old had to be substituted after just half an hour.

Setback for Leipzig too

The injury is also a setback for RB Leipzig. The club had relied on permanently handing over Werner, who was on loan, to Tottenham. According to dpa information, the Spurs have a purchase option worth 17 million euros. Postecoglou had praised Werner in recent weeks and had not ruled out a permanent commitment.

Werner moved to the London club from Leipzig on loan at the beginning of the year. He also wanted to recommend himself for a place in the German squad for the home European Championship this summer. He played the last of his 57 international matches to date in March 2023 in a 2-3 win against Belgium.

Five more games for the Spurs

“With only three weeks left to play, he won’t be back,” Postecoglou said of Werner. Spurs still have five games left in the Premier League, the next one this Thursday against Chelsea FC. As currently fifth in the table, Tottenham is fighting to qualify for the European Cup.
