Mixed feelings for the German teams at the start of the European Champions Cup! The VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe celebrated a dream start in front of their home crowd. The German champions prevailed against the Eagles Prague 13-0 after the ten-run rule in the seventh inning. The Guggenberg Legionnaires, on the other hand, had to accept a narrow 0-2 defeat at the hands of the Czech Republic’s record champion Draci Brno.

Landmark victory after Germaine home run

At the Brenz it took until the third period before the home side’s offensive started. Daniel Vavrusa and Drew Janssen took the 2-0 lead after shots from Janssen and Gary Owens. One inning later, the current Bundesliga runner-up led to the preliminary decision with an eight-run rally. Billy Germaine provided the highlight with a three-run home run. Shawn Larry finished things off with a two-run double in the sixth. On the pitcher’s mound, Jared Mortensen shined with ten strikeouts in six innings. Prague only managed two hits against the Canadian and reliever Mike Bolsenbroek. Box score

Missed chances cost victory

Regensburg experienced a much closer encounter in Brno. Scott Harkin (5.0IP, 3H, 1R, 1BB, 6K), Aljo Sujak (1.0IP, 1BB, 1K) and Patrick Mitchell (2.0IP, 1H, 1R, 4K) fought a pitcher duel with the Czech trio Medina/ Capka/Hurtado. In the second period, the Legionnaires missed their first good opportunity to score after a leadoff double from Marlon Jimenez. Two runs later, Elias von Garßen and Antonios Torres reached the bases with no outs. Again, uncountable. Brno countered in direct response with a solo home run. The Czechs made the final score in the seventh inning. Box score

It continues at the beginning of June

For the Bundesliga leaders it is now time to achieve their first success in their first home game against Prague. The VOITH Heath Heads will next travel to Brno. Both games will take place on June 5th at 7 p.m.
