Guggenberg Legionnaires Secure Walk-Off Win Against Heidenheim in Thrilling Game

Guggenberg Legionnaires also win the second game in the series against Heidenheim after a walk-off single from Eric Harms. Alex Schmidt with a home run, two RBI and two runs.

The top duel delivered what the baseball fans had hoped for. After a real baseball thriller, the Guggenberg Legionnaires celebrated their second narrow victory in the second game of the series against the Heideköpfe. But it took a walk-off single from Eric Harms to make it 6:5 in the Armin Wolf Arena, bringing home Terrell Joyce and Matt Vance.

The game started very promisingly for defending champion Heidenheim. William Germaine gave his team the lead in the first inning. Germaine would later take on a leading role again.

Schmidt strikes twice

First, however, the hosts worked to overcome the early deficit. In the third inning, Lou Helmig tied the game with a double that brought home Marlon Jimenez. That was also the starting signal for Regensburg’s further offensive. Alex Schmidt set the first highlight. He sent the ball deep into left field and over the fence into the parking lot. A home run in front of a home crowd is not an everyday occurrence for the national team’s shortstop. Accordingly, Schmidt was celebrated in the Armin Wolf Arena.

While Scott Harkin didn’t allow much more on the mound, his colleagues on offense added a little more. Alex Schmidt once again caused movement on the field and on the scoreboard. His single enabled Edoardo Cornelli’s run. Immediately afterwards, Schmidt scored the next point after a double from Devon Ramirez.

The Guggenberg Legionnaires had extended their lead to 4:1 and looked very stable. A failed experiment with Daniel Patrice on the mound that day also had no consequences. Nick Miceli, who has proven himself well in the role of closer, took over for him.

Germaine turns the game around

But in baseball, anything is possible until the end of the game. The Regensburg team had to experience that once again in the ninth inning. Heidenheim initially shortened the score to 2:4 after a single. Then William Germaine made his next big appearance. He not only walked over the plate with a home run, but also took Kilian Redle and Gary Owens with him. The Guggenberg Legionnaires were suddenly 4:5 behind.

But a defeat was not expected that day. Regensburg fought its way back into the game. Terrell Joyce first led with a single, then ended up at second base thanks to an error by Heidenheim pitcher Sven Schüller, while Marlon Jimenenz made it to first base. There Matt Vance took over for him as runner. A Sacrifice Bunt by Nino Sacasa put Joyce and Vance in scoring position. The Heidenheimers then tried to improve their defensive options and sent Lou Helmig onto the base with an intentional walk.

Regensburg answer by Eric Harms

Eric Harms ruined the Heideköpfe’s plan immediately afterwards. His single into left field clinched the decision. Terrell Joyce scored to equalize, Matt Vance slid in front of more than 750 people in the Armin Wolf Arena cheering for Regensburg’s victory.

With this success, the Guggenberg Legionnaires extend their lead in the table. Heidenheim slips into third place behind the Haar Disciples. But manager Martin Helmig’s team doesn’t have much time to celebrate. The second half of the four-game series continues in Heidenheim on Friday at 7 p.m.
