Gone but Not Forgotten: Remembering Gerhard Fleißner, a Judo Legend in Coburg

Gerhard Fleißner managed the fortunes of the oldest sports club in Coburg from 2012 to 2017. Under his leadership, the association surpassed the 1,500 member threshold for the first time.

The man, who achieved many great successes as an active fighter, was associated with the sport throughout his life. He learned the ABCs of judo in Bayreuth, but was now Associated with Coburg for over 50 years and also active in Bamberg for almost as long.

Fleißner passed all exams from 1st to 5th Dan, was a trainer, organizer of many competition events, international referee and always worked as an official at various levels and functions. Initially he was referee chairman in the Bavarian Judo Association, in 1996 he became vice president and in 2002 president of one of the largest judo regional associations in Germany.

Many awards

For his commitment, Gerhard Fleißner received many awards from his regional association, in his region and in the DJB. In 2010 he became honorary president of the Bavarian Judo Association and in 2014 he became an honorary member of the DJB. He was honored with 8th Dan in 2020 for his commitment to the sport of judo. He received the golden plaque for many years of outstanding voluntary work as an official for the benefit of Coburg sports in 2009 from the then Mayor Norbert Kastner.
