Giro 2024: BORA-hansgrohe must continue without sick Florian Lipowitz

Thursday May 9, 2024 at 11:11 am

Florian Lipowitz’s first big tour is over after just five stages. The 23-year-old German climbing prospect from BORA-hansgrohe woke up sick today and will not appear at the start of the gravel stage to Rapolano Terme.

“Unfortunately, Florian Lipowitz will not start today’s stage in the Giro d’Italia due to illness. Heal quickly, Lipo!”, BORA-hansgrohe encourages its German rider. Lipowitz’s resignation is a major blow to the German formation, as the young climber has been doing particularly well in recent weeks.

In the run-up to the Giro, Lipowitz surprisingly finished third in the Tour de Romandie. He also made an impression in the first week of the Tour of Italy – also the first major tour of his career. The German finished fifth in the first mountain stage to Oropa. In the general classification he was 27th after five stages, just over four minutes behind leader Tadej Pogacar.

Lipowitz is already the tenth quitter in the 107th Tour of Italy. Earlier this morning, Israel-Premier Tech announced that Michael Woods and Nadav Raisberg will also not appear at the start of the gravel stage. The Canadian and Israeli were involved in a crash on Wednesday and appear to be too battered to continue their journey.
