Para-swimmer Gina Böttcher was voted “Athlete of the Month” by the approximately 4,000 athletes supported by Sporthilfe. The 23-year-old caused a sensation at the European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira in April when she won three gold medals in the 150 meter individual medley, 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter freestyle within three days.
Only Germany’s best young and top athletes vote in the “Athlete of the Month” election initiated by Sporthilfe, giving the award its very special touch. “I am very surprised to have been chosen as ‘Sportswoman of the Month’ for April and am really happy about the title,” says Gina Böttcher. “I can’t yet fully realize how well the European Championships went for me, it will definitely take a while. “But it shows me that I’m on the right track to achieving my best performances in Paris and swimming to good placings,” said the athlete, who competes for SC Potsdam, with an extra dose of self-confidence on the way to the Paralympic Games after the hat-trick of titles , which will begin in around four months.
Second place in the Sporthilfe election was taken by rowers Oliver Zeidler. At the European Championships in Szeged, Hungary, the singles specialist won his third European Championship gold after 2019 and 2021, thereby showing that he is also a force to be reckoned with at the Olympic Games in Paris. In third place was Anna-Maria Wagner chosen. At the European Judo Championships in Zagreb, the 27-year-old fought her way to the final and won the silver medal in the weight class up to 78 kg.
For their outstanding achievements, the athletes were nominated for the election by the athletes’ commission in the DOSB, SPORT1 and Sporthilfe.
