EM 2024

The start of the 2024 European Championship is getting closer and closer. On June 14, the DFB team will open the tournament in Munich with a match against Scotland. However, preparations for the home European Championship will start much earlier.

Julian Nagelsmann and the DFB have recently announced the provisional squad, with a total of 27 names on the list. However, when the German national team comes together for the training camp in Blankenhain, Thuringia, on Sunday, not all of the nominees will be there.

“Some of our national players are still in action in the DFB Cup final and the Champions League final and will join the team later,” said Julian Nagelsmann in a statement from the DFB, referring to the professionals from Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.

The national coach reacted to this situation at short notice and nominated two players, Brajan Gruda from Mainz and Rocco Reitz from Gladbach, who normally play in the German U21 team.

“In order to be able to train optimally in the first period of preparation, even if one or the other is injured, we would like to give two young, promising players the opportunity to show what they can do in the A team,” explains Nagelsmann. “Many thanks to my fellow coach Antonio Di Salvo for the good exchange and the close cooperation with our U21s.”

According to the DFB’s statement, Gruda and Reitz will train with the senior national team until May 31, meaning they will no longer take part in the two test matches against Ukraine and Greece in June.

DFB team: Nagelsmann already has Gruda in mind for the 2026 World Cup

There seems to be no more opportunity for the two youngsters to jump on the European Championship train at the very last minute. Laut Florian Plettenbergtransfer insider from Sky, at least the Mainz player can hope for a place in the DFB squad in the future.

According to the report, Nagelsmann sees Gruda in the possible squad for the 2026 World Cup. Accordingly, the offensive player should get his opportunities with the senior national team after the home European Championship.

He can now submit his first letter of recommendation before the 2024 European Championship. The same applies to Reitz, who was considered one of the few bright spots at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the midst of a mixed season.

“It is always an honour for me to wear the eagle on my chest. I am therefore delighted that I will be able to be part of the national team for the first time and gain important experience there,” said Reitz, commenting on his nomination on the club’s own website.

He is looking forward to “getting to know everyone personally and being able to learn a lot from the currently best German players in the coming days.” So that he can come back in the future.

FC Bayern’s long search for a new coach could finally be over. After numerous top candidates such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, Roberto De Zerbi and Oliver Glasner turned down, a coach is now said to have decided to take on the job at the Munich club.
