German Olympic Sports Confederation praises refugee team

According to the German Press Agency, Thomas Weikert, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, was proud of the selection. The athletes are “a very special role model for the unfortunately far too high number of people who find themselves in a similar situation around the world and have had to leave their homeland involuntarily,” said Weikert. Nine of the appointed athletes are looked after by the DOSB. Another slalom canoeist from Iran who lives and trains in Germany is getting fit for the Olympics with the help of the World Canoe Federation.

For the first time, the selection in Paris will not start under the Olympic flag, but with its own emblem that has a heart in the middle. According to the IOC, all 36 Olympic participants have refugee status in their host country, which has also been confirmed by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Already three failures due to doping

Among others, the runner Anjelina Nadai Lohalith (29), who comes from South Sudan and who recently tested positive for the banned heart drug trimetazidine in a doping test, will not be there in Paris. It was already the third case among the candidates for the IOC refugee team.
