Georgia Surpasses Japan in Medal Rankings at World Judo Championships

Thanks to the titles of its young Tato Grigalashvili (24 years old) in the -81 kg category on Tuesday and Giorgi Sardalashvili (20 years old) in the -60 kg category on Sunday, Georgia overtakes Japan at the top of the medal rankings of the World Championships in Abu Dhabi. Grigalashvili won his third world title against the 20-year-old Russian Timur Arbuzov and will seek his first Olympic title this summer.

Japan, which did not send its starters to these Worlds, focused on Olympic preparation, did not collect any medals in this third day of competition. Another strong judo nation, France is only 12th with only two bronze medals. Before the Olympic Games in Paris, only Amandine Buchard on Sunday (-52 kg) and Clarisse Agbégnénou on Tuesday (-63 kg) have so far made a podium.
