A report by “L’Equipe” about Kevin Danso caused a stir. Accordingly, at the urging of Austria’s team boss Ralf Rangnick, the central defender asked not to have to play in his club Lens’s last Ligue 1 match at home against Montpellier on Sunday in order not to risk another injury after recently recovering from an adductor strain before the European Championships. Danso firmly denied this representation and spoke of a “complete hoax”.
According to “L’Equipe”, Danso took part in all training this week – he was only missing on Saturday. The newspaper wrote about a call from Rangnick in which the German allegedly threatened Danso not to take him to the European Championships if he played against Montpellier. The defender was “dismayed” and informed his coach Franck Haise “to demonstrate transparency.” Haise, on the other hand, was anything but happy and did not call Danso into the squad for Montpellier, it was said.
“Complete hoax”
Danso defended himself in a statement sent to the APA: “I am very angry and surprised by this French media report. It’s a complete hoax. I am in regular contact with our team manager and he keeps us informed and takes great care of us players throughout the season. But the fact that Mr. Rangnick put pressure on me not to play today is complete nonsense!” said the 25-year-old.
Danso emphasized that he was not yet fully match-fit after his injury. “So this morning, after a conversation with my coach here in Lens, it was decided that I would not be in the squad for the evening.”
Staff shortage in the ÖFB squad
Just under a month before the first European Championship game against France, Rangnick is struggling with a major staff shortage, especially in central defense. David Alaba’s failure is considered certain, even if it has not yet been officially confirmed. Philipp Lienhart has had to take a break for months. Maximilian Wöber has been out for weeks due to a torn muscle fiber, but should get fit.
Danso has not played a game since being substituted on May 3 against Lorient due to adductor problems. Rangnick will announce the squad for the final European Championship tests against Serbia and Switzerland on Tuesday (6 p.m. live on ORF Sport +), the squad will be at least largely identical to the final EURO squad.
