The last time Funchess was linked to an NFL team was prior to the 2022 season when he signed with the Detroit Lions, but he was released during the preseason. During his career he saw action in 62 games in which he accumulated 2,265 yards and 21 touchdowns after catching 164 passes thrown in his direction.

In an interview with the Carolina Panthers website, Funchess revealed that he made a series of promises to his grandfather that included playing professional basketball and now he has fulfilled it by joining the Carribean Storm Llaneros. “I told my grandfather, ‘I’m going to win the Super Bowl and then I’m going to play straight basketball,’” Funchess explained. The tight end couldn’t win the Super Bowl, but he played in the 50th edition.
