Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football team owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), celebrated its promotion to League One, the third division of English football, for the second time in a row with an extravagant party in Las Vegas. This year, the team managed to finish second in League Two, adding a total of 88 points, after having obtained 26 wins, 10 draws and 10 losses, a feat that marks its return to this level after 19 years.

The celebration in Sin City stood out for including images of the team enjoying themselves in renowned nightclubs and other luxurious amenities in the city. Unlike last year, where festivities were limited to pool parties and lavish dinners, even bigger celebrations are anticipated this year. The decision to award the team with this trip underscores Reynolds and McElhenney’s continued support and enthusiasm for their team’s success.

Throughout the celebrations, several Wrexham players, including captain Luke Young, and other notable figures such as James McClean and Steven Fletcher, have taken to social media to share moments from their experience in Las Vegas. McClean (he got on the plane with a reissue of an Argentine national team jersey, the same one worn by Diego Maradona in the 1994 World Cup), known for his skills on the field, was one of those who revealed the automatic extension of his contract, while Fletcher was offered a new deal within the team.

Wrexham AFC’s promotion not only symbolizes a sporting triumph but also the start of a new era under the management of Reynolds and McElhenney, who have boosted the club’s visibility and performance since its acquisition and the creation of a series showcasing the day day of the squad in its fight to reach the Premier League.

However, success also comes with difficult decisions, such as the release of eight players, including Young and long-range specialist Ben Tozer, decisions that signal the end of his time with the Welsh team. The list of athletes who will have to look for new directions is completed by defenders Aaron Hayden, Callum McFadzean, Ordan Tunnicliffe and Dan Davies, goalkeeper Rob Lainton and midfielder Owen Cushion.

To celebrate last season’s promotion, Ryan Reynolds, known for playing Deadpool and other big-name films, paid for a four-day trip for all the members of the Red Dragons’ first team, who drank drinks at the Wet Republic Ultra Pool at the MGM Grand hotel. They also dined at the exclusive Hakkasan restaurant, a renewed Asian fusion brand based in London that has a branch in the aforementioned Las Vegas hotel.

Promotion to League One secured Wrexham a place in a higher tier of English football for the first time since the 2004/2005 season. Since Reynolds and McElhenney took charge of the club in February 2021, with an investment of $2.5 million, the Welsh institution has seen a remarkable transformation. Their promotion to League One dates back to an exceptional performance in the previous season, scoring 111 points in the National League, setting an absolute record for English football in a 46-game championship. Under the technical direction of Phil Parkinson, the team has managed to position itself just two promotions away from reaching the summit of English football, the Premier League.
