Fortuna Düsseldorf Dominates Relegation Match, Takes Step Towards Bundesliga Promotion

Fortuna Düsseldorf is making great strides towards promotion to the German Bundesliga.

In the first leg of the relegation match, the club of ÖFB legionnaire Marlon Mustapha beat Bundesliga club VfL Bochum 3-0. On the other side, fellow legionnaire Kevin Stöger and his team now have to worry about staying in the league.

Fortuna forces his luck

In the 13th minute of the game, Fortuna’s Christos Tzolis first demonstrated his qualities on the dead ball. In sly fashion, he took a corner kick to the first post, from where the ball bounced onto the knee of Bochum’s striker Philipp Hofmann and then crossed the line.

Only two minutes later, Fortuna – as the club name suggests – was lucky, as ex-Salzburg player Bernardo headed a corner kick from Stöger onto the post.

Tzolis towers over Castroper Straße

The Greek youngster Tzolis remains the difference maker in this highly emotional match. In a perfectly executed counterattack, Düsseldorf’s best striker sets up his teammate Klaus with a sweet pass. Klaus scores to make it 2-0 and opens the door to promotion to the German top flight (64′).

The Tzolis gala is enriched by a new chapter after a powerful free kick from the Greek. Yannik Engelhardt is able to take advantage of the unfortunate defense by keeper Andreas Luthe without being challenged (72.)

Bochum, which has a famous supporter in the stands with the Bochum-born and Bayern star Leon Goretzka, suffered a bitter defeat in its own football temple on Castroper Strasse and now has to play catch-up in Düsseldorf.

The return match will take place next Monday (from 8:30 p.m. in the LIVE ticker >>>).
